Hey There.

The strategies that teachers use in the classroom are valuable outside the classroom. You know this. It's time everyone had access to the things teachers know. Now you do. Welcome!

New School Year's Resolution

New School Year's Resolution

Happy New Year!! I'm well aware that the calendar year won't change for another few months but a new school year is nearly upon us. It is so hard for me to believe! Starting this fall we have a Principal, 8th grader, 6th grader, 1st grader, preschooler, and a nearly 2 year old who gets mommy to himself more often.

Our family's life is heavily influenced by the school calendar so, the beginning of the school year really feels like a fresh start. The 1st day of school is our New Year's Day, only there will be no staying up until midnight the night before! Nope, it's time to get back on track around here. The night before we laying out school clothes and get to bed on time (most of the time).

Like nearly everyone, I was barely dragging along this past May. Now the backpacks have been washed, the pencils are new, and the kids are excited about school. I definitely don't have it all together here as the year is about to begin (not at all, sadly) but there is an excited momentum about getting things ready and started. I plan to hang on to those happy school vibes for as long as possible.

Whether we realize it or not many of us adopt a 'new beginning' mindset at the end of summer. Summertime is often less routine and by fall we are ready to jump into more predictable schedules and a higher level of productivity. It's time to get back to work. That's why, in my mind, the time is right for New Year's Resolutions.

I love New Year's. I dig the goal setting, resolutions, and quests toward better, different, new.  Although non-athletic, I love racing toward goals. Right now, by virtue of it being today, it would be a great time to  start moving forward (even if your life isn't dictated by a school schedule like mine). Today is a great day to start. Well, as I write this it's Friday. So, how about Monday?!

New School Year's Resolutions:

1. Keeping my eyes on my own Paper.

There are so many things that I am not good at. So many times I look at others and wish I had a little more of what I admire in them, in me. But this year, this Vegas girl is going to double down on her strengths. I might not be the best at a single thing. In fact, I know I am not the very best at anything. Not a thing. Except one. I am best at being me. No one else stands a chance in this arena. Even when I am not my favorite version of myself (often), I am the best at me (always). By virtue of the fact that there is no other me, I win. I'm the best, even at my worst I can hand myself a gold medal in the being Amie event. Winning (even when I'm clearly losing).

In order to be 'me' to the best of my ability, I can't worry how I measure up to my perception of someone else. I simply can't.

This is good news. Rather than feeling jealousy or shame, I am happy to celebrate and encourage the awesome that I see in another person. Let's cheer one another on! I am happy to learn something new from everyone I meet with no worries about not living up. What I have to offer this world, what you have to offer, is an exclusive. We all need to focus on what we are meant to offer during the season that we are in. Whatever our current contribution, we need to focus on doing that to the best of our ability.

We need to keep our eyes on our own papers.

Practically for me that means watching for when comparison creeps into my thoughts and refocusing on my own assignment. I was pretty lackadaisical in my boundaries with social media over the summer. For the fall, while I will still definitely enjoy it, it will be with more awareness and parameters. I'll enjoy it but I won't let it steal my joy. There is such thing as too much of a good thing. I'll set a certain window for social media  in my life and then close that window.  When I look around too much, I can loose focus. I can get caught up in what others are doing and forget that we have different assignments, different contributions to make. So, I'll do better to keep my eyes on my own paper this year.
