At the end of terrible week my neighbor brought me a bag of fresh lemons from her tree. She said I would know what to do. I did.

Here we look for hope in discouragement and learning in the defeat.  Add  sugar to the sour and multiply it for the refreshment of others.

Welcome! This is the place I get to do one of my favorite things, write. If you take the time to read, I am truly grateful. This website began in May of 2016. However, I have a long blogging history, any reference in the archives to Snippets and Tangents or Toddle Spots came in content that I brought along from the old blogs to this new space. Thanks for making the journey with me if you remember my old blogs, and welcome if you just got here.

Life is complicated. Relationships are complicated. The assignments we all have tend to get messy. I value simplicity but it's not so simple to keep it. That's a theme that I often come back to. Simple.

What can be simpler than lemon + sugar.

When sour seems to rule the day (lemon), we find away to change it or get something good from it (+sugar).

It's really the simplest recipe:

1c water + 1c sugar (stir, bring to a boil, let it chill)

Combine with 1c freshly squeezed lemon

Put in a 1 quart freezer bag and freeze. Now you have a concentrate of freshly squeezed lemonade.

When life calls (good or bad), stir into 7c of water.

Cheers to the sour, the sweet, and the combining of the two.

That's what you will find here at lemon + sugar.

A little about my life:

I was born in the early 80's. The very early 80's. Ok, I was born in the earliest 80. I resigned from my teaching position shortly after the birth of my first child in 2010.  My husband, Ryan, is the principal of our neighborhood school. Our lives are paced to the rhythm of a school schedule/calendar and have been for as long as....ever.

Ryan is the love of my life. School is a big part of our story. We started dating in high school and married in college. Our career paths continued to be school bound.  At this point in our lives, we have been 'Ryan and Amie' longer than not, and the entirety of our life together has somehow involved school. I am a school girl. I entered school in kindergarten at four years old and I guess I never exited.  School life is very much apart of my life, our life.

There are five children in our home. They all arrived within the span of four years. I am mommy to three of them and, we became auntie and uncle on special assignment to two of them, guardians. There are four boys and a girl, the eldest. There is an 11 year age span from youngest to oldest.

My writing is influenced by my faith as a follower of Christ, my teaching career/continued connection to school life, my current station as mom/auntie to a mass of kiddos, and camping adventures. I love to look for humor and truth in the daily, and I often find it there. When lemons abound, I look for sugar. There are lessons to be learned and joy to be found right where we are. I like to write about that.

We have a hybrid camper called Beauty towed by our mammoth 12 seater van, The Beast. We live in the California Bay Area but more specifically, the Silicon Valley. Many of our adventures are coastal, in the Santa Cruz mountains, or deep in the South Bay. We took a four week summer road trip in honor of our fifteen year wedding anniversary. Beauty helps us escape to a slower, simpler way, isn't that always the way with beauty?

A guiding Bible verse in my life is:

Be completely humble and gentle, be patient, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:2

I try to live and write with those words in mind. It's a challenge but when I do, it's good. My life is better for it.

Thanks for reading!

Always,

Amie
